The Game
There are nine innings in a professional game. For lower levels the innings may be fewer. Each inning is divided into the top and the bottom. The top inning when the visiting team is at bat. The bottom inning is when the home team will bat. Each team needs at least nine players, in the positions shown above.
Equipment
The defense team wears baseball gloves, to catch the ball.
The offense team uses a bat to hit the ball with. They are also required to use a batting helmet. To prevent any injuries to the head and face.
The Field
The part of the field closest to the bases is called the infield, and the grassy farther out is called the outfield.
The bases are 90 feet apart on the infield. The bases are closer for children's leagues. The bases are often called The Baseball Diamond.
Defense Positions
The pitcher in the middle of the mound who throws the ball toward home plate. The catcher catches the ball if it is not hit. The infielders are the first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and the third baseman. The outfielders are the left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder.
Four of the most common ways to get an offensive player out is:
Strikeouts, Forced Outs, Fly Outs, and Tag Outs.
Offense Positions
The offense team is the team that will be batting. They are put in order throughout the game and must stay in this order. It begins with the first batter.
If the batter hits the ball into play, then they run to first base and can run as many bases as they can without getting out.
If a batter gets four balls, this is when the ball in not thrown inside the strike zone, then they automatically go to first base.
If a batter is hit with the ball, they automatically go to first base.
If a batter gets three strikes which is swinging the bat at the baseball and missing or failing to put the ball into fair play. A baseball hit into foul territory is counted as a strike unless the batter already has 2 strikes. If the batter has 2 strikes, they can foul the ball and it will not be counted as a 3rd strike. When a batter reaches strike 3, their turn at bat is over. Then it is the next player's turn to bat.
When a batter hits the ball over the fence, it is a home run and gets to run all four bases and scores a run for their team.
The offensive team tries to scores as many runs as they can before getting three outs.
The team with the most runs at the end of the game is The Winner!!!!!
